A subspecialty within cardiology focused on the treatment of adults that were born with congenital heart defects. Our program focuses on clinical consultation, advanced imaging, and therapeutic surgeries when indicated to treat these conditions.
At Saint Thomas Heart, we offer adults with congenital heart disease a lifelong relationship with a cardiologist that specializes in these conditions. We can provide a variety of invasive procedures, if needed, to adults who have had operations as children. In addition, we provide evaluations to adults who have a new diagnosis of congenital heart disease.
Common procedures include replacement of the pulmonary valve, closure of atrial septal defects, repair of anomalous pulmonary veins, aortic valve surgery, pacemaker placement, repair of coarctation of the aorta, and mitral valve surgical procedures.
Our program includes experts in pediatric and adult congenital heart disease. Our adult congenital heart services include diagnostic tests and recommendations regarding medical treatment and interventions (both catheter-based and surgical), non-cardiac surgery, pre-conception counseling, pregnancy, and exercise.
In collaboration with a primary care physician and a cardiologist, adults have access to experienced congenital cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, therapeutic interventional cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology procedures, non-invasive diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation services and genetic counseling.
Services available to patients with adult congenital heart disease include:
- Minimally invasive surgery with a limited incision repair of congenital defects
- Reoperative procedures for correction of progressive congenital heart disease
- Heart transplantation for end-stage congenital heart disease
- Catheter based procedures to treat congenital heart disease
