Digital meters to end Qld banana disease

Energy provider Ergon Energy will roll out digital meters across north Queensland’s key banana-growing region in an effort to prevent its workers from spreading the devastating Panama disease.

Around 600 meters will be installed in the Tully and Innisfail areas, which produce 85 per cent of Australia’s bananas, in the wake of isolated outbreaks of the crop disease, the Queensland government says.

“Digital meters will avoid the need for meter readers to enter properties and therefore prevent the spread of the disease,” Energy Minister Mark Bailey said in a statement.
