But — surprise! — Freeform announced today that the pilot for a spinoff, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, is in the works.
In it, PLL stars Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish plan to reprise their roles as Alison DiLaurentis and Mona Vanderwaal, respectively. According to a news release, PLL creator I. Marlene King is “beyond excited” to introduce “a new world of thrills and chills in Beacon Heights.”
Except this isn’t actually a huge surprise to me, because, well, King has been hinting at more PLL.
Back in June 2016, when I attended a Freeform event with King, I asked her point blank whether Season 7 of PLL would be the last one for the Liars. You know what she said?
“It is a season of closure. … It’s the beginning of the end as we know it.” The end as we know it, huh? Sounds like a hint that there’s more we don’t yet know about!
And later that night, in a panel with other PLL cast members, writer/producer Charlie Craig added that if fans keep watching the show, then maybe the story would continue in “some other form.”
Like, a spinoff?!
These vague responses are making a lot more sense now.
After King’s next project, Famous in Love, didn’t turn out to be the next PLL, it isn’t hard to see why she’d want to revisit some of the original PLL ladies in a town where, as the release says, “The stress of needing to be perfect leads to the town’s first murder. Behind every Perfectionist is a secret, a lie and a needed alibi.”
The show is based on the book series The Perfectionists, written by PLL author Sara Shepard. So far, just a pilot of the show has been ordered.
‘Pretty Little Liars’ stars give two scenarios, but only one of actually happened. Are you a true #PLL fan?
