With 52 million votes cast, America was very invested in the outcome of Season 12 of America’s Got Talent, but when all was said and done, it was no surprise that 12-year-old Oklahoman Darci Lynne walked away with the title, the $1 million prize and a show at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.
Darci, who had kept a still upper lip all season, burst into tears on hearing the news.
“I was waterworks right here on this stage,” she said on the red carpet after her win. “I was like a water faucet. They were all bottled up inside. I felt so loved during my AGT journey by all the contestants, and all the staff, my friends and family, and everyone, it just all came out.”
Darci’s family rushed the stage to share in the celebration, and Darci’s little brother also had tears in his eyes.
She said, “I am really, really happy because my little brother cried and he’s never cried before, and it made me laugh, too, because, I was like, ‘You’re crying, man. You’re crying.’”
A highlight of the evening was Darci’s performance with Season 2 AGT winner and fellow ventriloquist Terry Fator, who has gone on to have his own show at The Mirage in Las Vegas. The two performed “Anything You Can Do” from Annie Get Your Gun,” along with their puppets Petunia and Winston.
Fator later revealed that he had been involved in coaching Darci during her stint on AGT after receiving a video of her from a mutual friend.
“There was something different about her,” he said. “She has an amazing work ethic, and so she asked me, once she got on America’s Got Talent, if I would help her. I helped her write some of her material, come up with some of the ideas and bits and songs. We worked together, and it was really a lot of fun. How much fun that she actually won the thing. I tell you, I feel like a proud dad. I’m not a dad, but I feel like a proud dad.”
The rest of the results were as follows: Runner-up Angelica Hale, third place Light Balance, fourth place Mandy Harvey and fifth place Sara Carson and Hero.
Following is more of the conversation with Darci:
Congratulations. Who were the people that rushed onstage when you won?
Those were my brothers and my family and my mom and my dad. They made me feel so good that they came on the stage. I was so overcome with joy, and I was kind of shocked and delirious at that time so I can’t remember anything.
We talked with Terry Fator earlier, he said you were the perfect ventriloquist, what was it like working with him?
It went so well. Terry is like the nicest guy ever. I love working with him. I always fangirl when I see him because he is so awesome. Just performing with him was phenomenal.
How has Terry’s advice been?
His advice has been so encouraging. I am really happy to have advice from someone who has been on America’s Got Talent before and has been in my boat.
He mentioned you might be doing a tour together?
He also said he invited you to perform at his show?
Oh, my goodness gracious!
Along with performing, of course, you get a big cash prize. What do you want to do with that?
I want a Pug so bad because I love puppies. It has been a long time since I had a puppy. I want a Pug because they have wrinkles and fat roles and they are so cute.
Do you have a name for the Pug?
No, not yet. Hopefully, in the future I will get a Pug and I will let everyone know what it’s name is.
And your mother’s dishwasher?
Oh, yes. Don’t forget. I have to get my mom a dishwasher, maybe even a fridge, too, along with it. You never know.
Do you know the acts that are going with you to Las Vegas?
I do not. But I don’t ever care which ones. I am just so excited that some of them are going to be there.
One of the is Angelica…
She told me and I am so, so excited for that. We are going to have so much fun there.
What did you think last night when the judges said you could win?
It made me really happy to hear that from the judges because they are America’s Got Talent judges and it means a lot coming from those big voices. I was really glad it went so well.
Is a show in Las Vegas your goal?
I feel it would be pretty cool to have a Vegas show. It would also be pretty cool to be on a TV show, a movie or Broadway. Anything like that would be a dream come true for me.
Are you home schooled or do you go to school?
I am at a public school. I am not a fan of home schooling. I tried it before when I was in gymnastics but it is not the same as having a teacher teach you, having classmates with you, and seeing your friends every day at lunch. I enjoy public school more.
Do you want to do an album with your own songs?
I feel that would be pretty cool, yeah.
Do you write y our own songs?
No, I am not a songwriter. I think it would be drastic if I tried to write a song.
America’s Got Talent Live will take place in Las Vegas on Friday, Nov. 3 and Saturday, Nov. 4 in the PH Showroom at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Along with Darci, the performers will be Angelica Hale, Light Balance and Preacher Lawson.
